AJR took the stage at the DELTA Center on July 16-17 in Salt Lake City for two unforgettable nights, delivering a concert experience that fans will cherish for a long time. Growing up through high school, AJR’s music resonated with me in ways I never expected. Maybe it was the upbeat songs that just made you bop your head or maybe it was the Broadway-like sound they brought to all their songs. Whatever it is their songs delve into the realities of life, and I found a deep connection with their lyrics and sound.

Many fans share this sentiment, despite the critics who claim their music is repetitive or outdated. To those critics, I say: they don’t understand the magic of AJR. They set the stage on fire, delivered an electrifying concert, and continue to guide us through the complexities of life. As Jack so aptly put it, “I’ve found my people—those who think and feel the same way I do.”

almost monday

The night began early with up-and-coming San Diego-based, almost monday. We here at Utah Concert Review have had the opportunity to see almost monday earlier this year when they toured with Beach Weather. So we knew what was in store for the AJR crowd. When they guys took the stage the Delta Center was about 60% full. Generally for an opener fans of the headliner are walking in while they perform. It was good to see a decent-sized crowd for almost monday. Those in attendance were treated to a high-energy performance. They did a great job firing up the crowd. As each seat was filled I noticed the audience getting really involved and into almost monday’s set. By the time the set was over people were impressed with what they just saw. I think big things are in store for almost monday.

mxmtoon

Next up was mxmtoon. Like almost monday, we’ve had the opportunity to see mxmtoon here in Utah. We were in attendance at The Complex back in 2022. We were excited for the AJR fans to see her performance but when she took the stage and everyone cheered loudly it was obvious that the crowd was not only familiar but excited for her performance.

mxmtoon shared with us that she has been making music for the last seven years, recalling playing the famed Kilby Court in Salt Lake City to 150 people. She then giggled as she told us the next song would be “Seasonal Depression”. mxmtoon’s music is so interesting because while covering what might be considered dark or maudlin topics, the music itself is upbeat and even danceable. People were shining their phone lights and clapping along throughout. mxmtoon was very appreciative of the reception from the crowd. I think she gained a lot more fans from these shows.

AJR

Opening with a spectacular performance of “Maybe Man,” the show started with 15 people dressed in black and white, creating an illusion of the singer appearing in multiple places at once with each beat of the flashing lights. As the climax hit, AJR emerged from beneath the stage, kicking off the night with explosive energy. The creativity and energy throughout the concert were undeniable, bringing the stadium to life. A few numbers in, the audience was treated to incredible movie animations featuring Jack acting in different sports roles. It was amazing to see such a well-crafted production, evoking a sense of childlike wonder.

AJR continued to play fan favorites, with each song showcasing their unique style and emotional depth. One particularly touching moment was the performance of “God Is Really Real,” a tribute to their father. This song reminded us that the three brothers are human too, navigating life with its ups and downs despite their celebrity status. The crowd around us was jumping and jamming, fully immersed in the emotions conveyed through Adam and Jack’s voices.

The band’s enthusiasm was contagious as they jumped and danced around the stage to their own music, creating an infectious energy that kept everyone on their feet. This is an experience that I will never forget, and I spent all the time with my brothers. We grew up in different eras, but the struggles, anxiety, and just life in general are hitting us all in different ways, yet similarly. We all face different struggles in our own way. Their music helps me in so many ways, helping turn my life around.

As the concert progressed, the anticipation built for the next songs. AJR did not disappoint, delivering “Good Part” and then their biggest hit, “BANG.” The entire audience was on their feet, bouncing to the beat and jamming along, making it a truly unforgettable experience. Midway through the concert, AJR performed a three-part song series: “Turning Out,” “Turning Out II,” and “Turning Out III.” This emotional roller coaster provided a personal glimpse into Adam’s life, further connecting the audience with the band’s journey.

In a unique twist, the band brought their talents into the crowd, making their way up to the nosebleed section and performing “World’s Smallest Violin.” Although it was hard to see them from a distance, the experience was thrilling for those in the section they visited. The concert continued with more fan favorites, including “Burn the House Down,” “Way Less Sad,” and “Weak.” The night ended with an amazing performance of “2085,” a song about growing up and navigating life. The storytelling and emotional depth of their songs made the concert feel magical.

AJR’s creativity, energy, and genuine connection with their audience made this concert a standout event. For those who spent their July evenings with AJR at the DELTA Center, it was an experience they will treasure forever.
