The Struts played a high-energy rock and roll show at the Depot in SLC. They were joined by Dirty Honey as they celebrated the 10-year anniversary of their incredible debut album “Everybody Wants.” The Struts have made consistent tour stops over the last decade. UCR has loved the opportunity to cover this remarkable band from the UK.
Dirty Honey

Dirty Honey came out onto the stage like rock stars, owning the stage like they were headlining the concert. Lead singer, Marc LaBelle, came out onto the stage and opened the band’s set by saying, “Salt Lake City make some f*cking noise!” “Now it’s not even close to rowdy up in here tonight, Salt Lake City, I said, Are you ready for a party tonight? We’re gonna find out right now!” From the start of their performance, the crowd was having so much fun with the band, dancing along to songs and even singing along to others.

The Los Angeles-based band has recently been performing all over the world, LaBelle saying, “This very stage right here at the depot was really a special night for us, it was kinda like the second show we had ever done on tour with anybody, and we were here with an artist you might have heard of, by the name of Slash. We all love him very much, and he was the first person to really ever take a chance on us.
“Over the past few months, we were all over Europe touring with everyone from Guns N’ Roses to Scorpion, playing shows out in London, and when we got back to the states, we thought that we should finish some new sh*t, so we are gonna play some new music here for you tonight.” The name Slash had the audience cheering, and happy for the success of the amazing opener they had just watched.

LaBelle shouted out the band’s amazing drummer, Jaydon Bean, as he’s from SLC! This had the crowd excited to hear more from the band.
Dirty Honey connected with the crowd very well. LaBelle jumped into the pit a couple of times during their set, encouraged the crowd to sing, dance, and clap along, and towards the end of the set, jumped into the middle of the crowd and stood on a chair to sing a song, surrounded by the fans.

The Struts

The Struts came onto stage with a cheerful and highly energetic stage presence, jumping onto the stage and playing the song “Primadonna Like Me”. The crowd was instantly up and on their feet, dancing and singing along.

Lead singer Luke Spiller opened up his show by saying, “Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, If you don’t know by now, we are the Struts from the UK. Is everybody ready for a good time?” Before playing one of their most popular songs, “Body Talks,” which the crowd knew every word to.

Spiller’s stage presence reminded me of old videos of Freddy Mercury playing with Queen. The Rockstar energy was immaculate and radiating through the venue. Spiller welcomed the crowd to the show by saying, “This is the 10 year anniversary of Everybody Wants! We are gonna have some fun tonight. How about we play that debut album from start to finish right here, right now. Sounds Good? First up, Roll up…” Which Spiller rolled off his tongue, adding a fun touch to the title.

The highlight of the night was when the intro for The Struts’ hit song “Could Have Been Me” started to play, and the crowd went wild. Everyone in the whole venue was singing along. It was one of the loudest crowds I’ve ever heard. When the song was seemingly over, Spiller said, “Get ’em hands up, I’m not done yet. It’s not over until I say it is. Sing it to me. Louder!” This just made the crowd go even wilder, screaming the lyrics this time.

Spiller interacted with the crowd often, asking them to clap along, sing, and wave their hands around. The most fun instance of this was during the song “Mary Go Round” when he asked the crowd to raise their flashlights up, down, and spin them around to match the lyrics of the song. It created a little light show and engaged the crowd in a way unlike I’ve seen other artists do before.

Spiller shared some sentiment about this show, saying, “Thank you so much. I have a feeling this is gonna be one of the best nights of the tour, I can feel it. There’s an energy you can feel it. Now I’m not gonna lie, I’ve been pretty sick recently, but I’ll tell you one thing, I didn’t roll out of my sick bed today and not have a boogie woogie with you all, alright? We didn’t come all the way to Salt Lake City and not dance, alright? Are you with me, baby?! I’m gonna hold you accountable, all right? I wanna see some booty shaking going on, show me your booty shake! Anyway, this is Dirty Sexy Money!”
Despite the slight sickness, Spiller performed seemingly perfectly, and I couldn’t even tell if he was feeling under the weather. The crowd was definitely boogying, enough to cause the floor to shake in the venue! Everyone was having a great time.

Spiller’s interactions didn’t just stop there, though, saying “This is a rock and roll show innit, are you witnessing The Struts? Are we in Salt Lake City? Is this the greatest crowd of the entire tour? Then how about you f*cking scream it, cmon.” and “Thank you so much, we are having so much fun. Let me see you smile, Lemme see those pearly American teeth. Haha, are you having a good time?”(cheers from crowd)

“That’s what it’s all about. So one of the great things about doing this tour, is revisiting some of the songs that we haven’t played, and this next one we haven’t played, well probably about 9 years, and the last time we played this it was in a very small pub in the United Kingdom, and literally we played in front of one man and his german shepard, one man and his dog, that phrase taken to a whole new level, but it’s entirely true. (someone shouts, “It was me”) You have a strange British accent, my friend, but now we’re gonna play it tonight, and it’s safe to say we have a few more people here tonight than one man and his dog. That’s because of you, we love you so much, thank you.”

The entire album, “Everybody Wants,” was played fully through for the 10-year anniversary show. The fans loved it. The energy in the room was electric, and the performance was incredible. The Struts are welcome back in Utah anytime.
