We are nearing the end of Utah First Credit Union’s season of concerts and with the last handful of shows, Five Finger Death Punch was a perfect addition to the lineup. Though the weather brought on a little bit of rain and a temporary lightning delay of the show, the fans refused to shy away from getting to see this performance. As the crowd filed back in from seeking shelter from the lightning delay, it was time to prepare for a lineup of music that can only be described as musical whiplash in more ways than one.
Eva Under Fire
Starting off the night strong was Detroit-based band, Eva Under Fire. Taking the stage after a short weather delay, Eva Under Fire immediately had a strong and demanding presence. With an all-new album, “Villainous,” released earlier this year, the band had a bunch of new songs to perform, and each one was banger after banger. At one point they gave us an amazing cover of Journey’s “Separate Ways,” giving the song a heavy metal tone. The crowd went absolutely wild when they played this cover, and you could hear everyone singing the lyrics back to the stage.
Eva Under Fire was a perfect addition to a Five Finger Death Punch show. They’re sound was so powerful and the performance was so captivating. With the release of their new album, I am excited to see Eva Under Fire pull off a headlining tour. They would put on an absolutely killer show at venues such as The Complex or even The Depot.
Cody Jinks
Next up of the night was a country artist named Cody Jinks. This being a Five Finger Death Punch show, having a country artist play in a lineup of heavy metal bands is a big reason why I would say this show gave musical whiplash to those that attended. The vibe was completely shifted to a boot scootin’ country show, and surprisingly, the crowd was here for it. There was not one single person without a smile on their face while Cody Jinks played through his set. The fun part about this set is that Cody Jinks mentioned that they were playing songs that they don’t normally get to play on their headlining shows.
Making his way through his set, which was quite a bit longer than the first opener’s set, Cody Jinks was quite a surprising delight to the night. His crowd work was top-notch, and at one point he stopped his set for a medical emergency that was going on in the crowd. Cody was a complete class act. Toward the end of his set, he covered AC/DC’s “It’s a Long Way to the Top,” and it was such a fun country twist on a rock and roll classic.
With 3.4 million monthly listeners on Spotify and around 14 different albums released, Cody Jinks would be an absolute killer act should he ever return to play a headlining tour. I would love to see him play at Red Butte Garden or even play a slot at the Red West music festival here in Utah.
Five Finger Death Punch
Finally, it was time for Five Finger Death Punch to take the stage. By the time they started their set, it was already almost 10 PM in Utah, and this was primarily due to the weather delay earlier in the day. The band had an explosive start to their set with crazy backdrops and pyrotechnics going on to some heavy guitar sounds and aggressive vocals. There was an immediate sea of crowd surfers and the fans couldn’t stop headbanging to the music. This is the other reason I described this show as musical whiplash, because while Five Finger Death Punch was on stage, you couldn’t help but headbang.
About halfway through their set, they would go on to talk about celebrating 250 years of America being a country. Between American flags, a country artist opening, and a lot of heavy music following that, the theme of the concert felt as though it were the 4th of July all over again. The stage setup was absolutely wild as well, with the drummer being put on a high platform, and fireworks going off on stage as well. There were points where the band would have costume changes as well, which really added to the narrative of the show.
Getting through the show, it was filled with face-melting guitar parts, and it was just an absolutely good time. At one point, the rest of the band would leave the stage, and the drummer gave an earth-shattering drum solo. Coming back to the stage, the band would go on to play their song “Wrong Side of Heaven,” which is their top song on Spotify. Ending their set with their song “Never Enough” before coming back out to play a 3-song encore, Five Finger Death Punch was absolutely killer.
With the release of their new album, “Legacy,” and the end of their set, Five Finger Death Punch had a perfect mix of fan favorites and new songs in their setlist. Getting to hear them live is something that has to be experienced if you are a fan of Five Finger Death Punch’s music, and I can’t wait for the next time they come to Utah.
