Earlier this month, Ogden Twilight welcomed beloved indie band Big Thief for a sold-out show closing out their ‘Somersault Slide 360 Tour’and bringing a close to this season’s Ogden Twilight. This was a show that I was definitely very excited to shoot, as I adore this band so much! They always put on an incredibly wholesome performance! This group has great energy that feels like they’re just one big family. Fans showed up with their friends and family, dressed their very best. The merch line was long, and there were really sick posters that I saw. I also saw my good friends and caught up with them in the photo pit! The weather was perfect, and everyone was chatting and enjoying themselves!

Big Thief is an indie folk band formed in Brooklyn, New York, in 2015. It was founded by the lead singer/songwriter Adrianne Lenker, bassist Max Oleartchik, drummer Jason Burger, and guitarist Buck Meek. The lineup has changed a couple of times over the past 10 years and now features touring bassist Joshua Crumbly and long-time member/drummer James Krivchenia. They released their debut album ‘Masterpiece ’ in 2016 and have since released 5 more albums! Many of them have been very successful and nominated for multiple Grammys. I personally really love their most recent one, ‘Double Infinity’!
Aaron Maine

Opening for Big Thief was Aaron Maine of the band Porches. He normally plays with his band but played solo this night! He seemed to be quite humble and grateful to be playing for everyone. He smiled a lot at the crowd and had such a genuine essence that was a bit infectious. I was not familiar with him beforehand, but my friends had said that they were huge fans! His music is very chill and synth-heavy, and he’s also featured on ‘Turnstile’s Never Enough: Versions album’.

When Big Thief walked on, the crowd cheered so, so loud! Adrianne walked out carrying James like a baby and set him down at his drums. Already, I could see how happy and playful they felt. The crowd cheered and laughed and was quick to film that humorous moment. As the first notes of ‘Paul’ started playing, I watched with eagerness and excitement, knowing this was gonna be such a great and memorable set, and I could see that the crowd was going to be so full of energy!

As they pulled out songs like “Vampire Empire”, “Simulation Swarm”, and “Los Angeles”, the twang of the guitars, the slap of the drums and bass, and Adrienne’s sweet voice rang out and hit straight into my chest. Talk about a devastating sound! Their music is so impactful and beautiful. The audience went wild when they played some unreleased tracks like “Born for Loving You”, “Mr. Man”, and “Christmas Day”, and also “Adrianne Lenker’s Real House”.

The lighting was ambient and moody, because the music and raw instrumentals were the focal point. You could just close your eyes and be transported to another place; a tangible feeling, almost floating. Adrienne talked a bit about how they’d been on tour for a long time and that they were having a lot of fun and were still so happy to be doing this! Their set is so unique every night, and I’m sure that keeps it very fresh and interesting for them!

They closed out with “Incomprehensible” and came back to play a couple of rare tracks for the encore! If you’ve ever considered seeing a Big Thief show, DO IT! Do not skip out on this experience; it is so serene and magical and fun. Adrienne is one of a kind and one of my absolute favorite vocalists and songwriters!
