Chance The Rapper performed at The Union Events Center on Tuesday, September 29, as part of his Coloring Book 10th anniversary tour. Going into the show, I knew Chance’s songs, but I definitely wasn’t as familiar with his music as many of the fans in the audience. I came in as a listener and left as a fan.

From the moment Chance took the stage, it was clear how much Coloring Book still means to the people who have been listening to it since its release in 2016. The energy of the album was brought back to life throughout the night, with the crowd singing along, dancing, and reacting to nearly every song.

I’ve photographed many concerts, but it’s not often that I see an audience stay completely engaged throughout an entire set. Chance performed for more than two hours, and the crowd remained energetic and invested from beginning to end. It was obvious that many of the people in the room had been waiting a long time to experience these songs live again.

One of my favorite things about photographing artists is seeing how they interact with their audience. I loved how engaged Chance was throughout the entire set. Artists who can bring that kind of energy to every song make the experience more exciting for me as a photographer, while also helping me understand what makes their music so meaningful to their fans.

When Chance began performing “Sunday Candy,” the audience went crazy. The energy grew even more when he came down from the stage to be with the crowd. He gave fans the opportunity to sing into the microphone with him, turning the performance into something that felt less like an artist performing to an audience and more like everyone in the room was sharing the moment together.

Throughout the performance, Chance also spoke about his faith and his belief that he was there to let God speak through him. He repeatedly reminded the audience that they are loved and that they matter. During these moments, the room became noticeably quieter as everyone stopped to listen. Seeing an audience that had been so energetic become completely still and attentive showed how much those words meant to the people in the room.

It was a special experience to be there and to have the opportunity to review and photograph the show for Utah Concert Review. Chance hasn’t performed in Utah since 2017, making his return especially exciting for longtime fans. Throughout the night, he repeatedly talked about how much he loved the energy in Salt Lake City and expressed his desire to return again soon.

I’m excited to see what Chance has in store for his music in the future. He is an incredible performer who knows how to command a room, connect with his audience, and make people want to stop and listen. I’m glad he decided to return to Utah for the Coloring Book anniversary tour. As both a photographer and a listener, it was one of my favorite shows I’ve had the opportunity to photograph and review.
