I recently had the opportunity to attend a concert at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City featuring the incredibly talented rapper NF. People have been telling me about NF for some time. I was excited to see him perform live and witness his raw talent and energy on stage. NF is often labeled as a “Christian Rapper: I didn’t find this to be the case.  He was signed to a Christian record label and his lyrics are clean.  But I don’t think he’s part of the Christian music scene.  At least not from my observation. I think NF is hoping to reach all audiences and doesn’t want to be pigeonholed into one faith base. And from what I could tell, there was a wide variety inside Delta Center.

Foo Fighters

The tragic and shocking passing of drummer Taylor Hawkins on March 25, 2022, hit the rock world hard, and Foo Fighter fans even harder.  As we mourned the loss of Hawkins, we also wondered if we’d also be morning the end of one of the best Rock bands today.  Would Foo Fighters continue?  And if they did, would we be able to embrace a new drummer in the band?  After tour and festival cancellations were announced, speculation grew.  If anything we knew it would at least be a while before we saw a new incarnation of Foo Fighters.

With the Twilight Concert Series coming to a close, I had the pleasure of watching Soccer Mommy take the stage for the penultimate performance of the 2023 lineup. This summer’s series featured a number of impressive artists, including Lord Huron, Death Cab for Cutie, and The Head and The Heart. Like these previous concerts, Soccer Mommy’s performance took place at the Gallivan Center, which to my surprise, fit the thousands of people in attendance.

Friday, August 4th was another excellent night for the SLC Twilight Concert Series. Thousands of local music lovers gathered downtown at the Gallivan Center for the sold-out show featuring co-headliners The Head And The Heart, and Father John Misty. This was a show I had been excitedly anticipating for quite some time. I have been listening to The Head And The Heart since they began. They have become one of my favorite bands. So in February, when they announced their 2023 tour dates and locations, I quickly scanned the list, hoping to see Salt Lake City.

[MESSAGE FOR THE CLERGY]

In case you missed it, the legendary Swedish rock band, Ghost, made an appearance at the USANA Amphitheatre on August 7th, 2023 while on their RE-IMPERATOUR. It certainly was a night that all in attendance won’t soon forget. Utah is their fourth stop thus far on the tour. So if you still want to participate in their life-changing, theatric, pyro, and fog-filled ritual, visit their website for more details at ghost-official.com.

Ghost released their debut album in 2010 and since then have continued to utilize their love of theatrics, horror, mystery, and Scandinavian metal roots to create an experience unlike anything you’ve witnessed before. You’ll find the lead singer Tobias Forge, who goes by “Papa Emeritus”, dressed in a variety of outfits throughout the night. All very luxurious. Perhaps one of his most iconic outfits consisted of black Papal regalia adorned with decorative skull-like designs and other symbols and his face covered in a prosthetic mask and makeup resembling that of a skeleton. You will find all of the other band members, known as “Nameless Ghouls”, wearing slight variations of the same face concealing costumes, with one of the most memorable features being their masks that have these big black goggle-like eyes. Eyes that will pierce your soul.

Back in 2018, when I heard that there was going to be a musical adaptation of the 1988 film Beetlejuice I must admit that my first thought was, “This is going to be terrible”.  I’m not sure exactly why I thought that.  Maybe because the film is so great and there are so many amazing actors that gave such iconic performances that I didn’t think anyone would ever be able to see the characters played differently or by different actors.  Whatever the reason was, I didn’t have the best attitude when it came to the production.

On August 3rd, 2023, the Doncaster, England legend, Dominic Richard Harrison – more famously known as YUNGBLUD – performed at The Complex in Salt Lake City, Utah. This show has been long anticipated by Utah YUNGBLUD fans. Considering the last time he made an appearance here was his sold-out show at The Complex in 2019(certainly not without trying though). The cancellation of shows in 2020, a giant snowstorm that got them stuck between Denver and Salt Lake in 2022, and other scheduling conflicts only added to the excitement, buzz, and anticipation to see the young rockstar return to the Beehive State.
