Role Model’s Chuck On Tour stopped by Beddy’s Plaza at America First Field on September 15th.
It’s been about a year since I attended a concert at Beddy’s Plaza at America First Field. I was excited to be back because I remember the atmosphere being so alive and energetic. Beddy’s Plaza was a perfect location for Role Model’s biggest headline tour to date. When I arrived at America First Field, I immediately noticed the long line at the merchandise tent. The plaza was already packed and full of fans wearing the Chuck On Tour merch. I also noticed a lot of Fans wearing their own decorated apparel with the words “WHAT THE CHUCK”, “LOVE I YOU”, and “CHUCK FEVER”.
Samia
Samia is a songwriter from New York City. I first heard about Samia when I came across her NPR Tiny Desk performance. It was an intimate and vulnerable episode. Her debut album was in 2020 and is titled The Baby. The opening track off her debut album titled “Pool” is one of her most recognizable songs, hitting millions of streams on Spotify alone. I would highly recommend that NPR performance if you want a preview of her storytelling and lyricism. Role Model, whose real name is Tucker Pillsbury, is an American songwriter and singer.
Samia hit the stage a little past 7:30 with a venue full of fans. The weather was perfect for the start of the concert. Samia’s set was around 30 minutes, and she performed “Triptych”, “Sacred, “Bovine Excision”, “Pool”, and “Is There Something in the Movies?”. The crowd was interactive with Samia throughout the whole set by shouting her lyrics and waving their hands in the air. Samia thanked the crowd and band members by name right before dancing and singing her last song. It was around 8 pm as the plaza waited for the changeover. The night sky was out by the point in the night, which added to the experience of an outdoor show.
Role Model
The first time I heard Role Model was from his Kansas Anymore album. Role Model has been on a run this past year, touring with Gracie Abrams, a Fallon performance, and an SNL debut and performance that featured Charli XCX. Role Model released an album last month titled Chuck Timely & The Hourglass. He spoke about the record and said that Chuck was born after the songs were written and how time was on his mind; the two created Chuck Timely.
Chuck Timely is both a fictional character and an alter ego. He said this about Chuck in an interview: “I feel he was always in the background of photos with Michael Jackson for some reason, but also weirdly knows Olivia Rodrigo and has been through this journey through the decades.” I was interested and excited to see Chuck live in person because of all the effort and attention to detail he put into this album and persona.
The crowd knew it was time as “Chuck’s Mantra” hit the speakers and fans ran towards the front of the stage. Role Model slowly walked onto the stage, and the crowd began to cheer. He began his set with “High Hopes 3000”, and “Look At That Woman”. As I walked around the plaza, I noticed there was the same amount of dancing in the back of the plaza as there was towards the front. I could instantly tell that he had a dedicated fanbase. He told the crowd that you’ll know if it’s going to be a show after the first two songs, and said it was going to be a good one tonight.
One of my favorite song performances of the night, and a song I enjoy off the new album, is titled “Good Thing”. The song slowed things down while everyone pulled out their phones, lighting up the plaza. I learned that this song was created from a music session that was around an hour long. Role Model would soon play “Love I You”, one of his more popular songs. He would jump into the crowd and have his fans help with the back-and-forth dialogue in the song that originally includes Dakota Johnson. This performance was followed by fans cheering the word “Chuck.”
Role Model was interactive with the crowd throughout the night. He went on to perform older music like “Writing’s On The Wall” and “a little more time”. He joked about how he was iffy about Sandy, Utah, but took it back once he saw the crowd.
This was my first time hearing both Samia and Role Model live. After watching Samia’s NPR performance, I was excited for the opportunity to hear her storytelling in person, and it did not disappoint. When I first listened to Chuck Timely & The Hourglass, the music itself was an experience. Hearing and seeing this album live in person added another level to it. If you can attend a Role Model show, I would highly recommend it. Especially if you enjoy dancing, great energy, and a journey through his music.
