Freddie Gibbs brought the energy to Salt Lake City at the SLC Twilight Concert Series, with opening act Amie Blu and local opener Roo Nostalgia.
Roo Nostalgia
The now Salt Lake City local Roo Nostalgia had the crowd starting off the night right. The rapper instantly had the crowd excited and smiling. Running out onto the stage with his backing band, Roo Nostalgia started off by saying, “ Twilight!!! How we feelin! My name is Roo Nostalgia, let’s get it. You all ready?” before opening his set with the song “Daydreamer”. This song was a perfect way to introduce his musical style to the crowd, the intricate storytelling and naturally calm backing tones. By the end of the song, Roo Nostalgia had the crowd singing his lyrics back to him, giving the local band an I made it moment with the SLC crowd.
Not only was Roo Nostalgia winning over the crowd, but he was also having the best time interacting with them, having jumped into the pit multiple times to be closer to them and to teach them some call-and-response moments in his songs, along with getting them hyped up for the night ahead and moving about the crowd, swaying their arms, clapping along, and jumping around.
Roo Nostalgia shared with the crowd something very special about the city, saying, “This is actually really crazy, because you know, I’m a local. And locals being able to do this stuff like this is really big, and it doesn’t happen a lot. So, sh*t, you guys have fun with me. I’ll have fun with you, and let’s show Salt Lake what rap is all about. Let’s show that we have rappers here in Salt Lake. Rap culture here in Salt Lake. We’re all just trying to be somebody, right? Funny enough, that’s what this next song is called.” The crowd loved this and really loved being able to support the local rap scene as well as the larger scene.
Amie Blu
The 23-year-old South London artist, Amie Blu, brought a more R&B vibe to the night. The heartfelt lyrics with her soothing voice mesmerized the crowd. To start out her set, Blu came onto the stage and said, “Hi guys, my name is Amie Blu! This is my first time in Utah, let alone in Salt Lake City. Okay, this next song is for like anyone who has a difficult relationship, difficult relationship with their family. And it’s called “Bite.”
Blu’s lyrics had the whole crowd almost in tears, and the lyrics were all too relatable to so many in the crowd. At the same time, a few members in the crowd seemed to have found comfort in the song and the understanding that someone else had understood their same pain; it was a beautiful moment. At the end of her set, Amie Blu thanked the crowd for having her, and she expressed how excited she was to see Freddie Gibbs go on.
Freddie Gibbs
The legendary rapper and Grammy Award winner and nominee Freddie Gibbs took the Gallivan stage with such power that had the crowd chanting his name and watching his every move. Water was being thrown around, lights were flashing, and the crowd was losing their minds over seeing Freddie Gibbs in the flesh. To start his set off Gibbs ran onto the stage and shouted “Salt Lake City!!! How the f*ck we feelin!” to which DJ Thurst replied saying, “If you’re ready for Freddie Gibbs let me hear you say, Freddie! Freddie” the crowd happily obliged, chanting his name and Gibbs went on to say, “Hands Up! Hands Up! Hands Up!” getting the crowd so excited to hear his first song of the evening “1985”.
Freddie Gibbs wasn’t the only artist on stage; he was joined by DJ Thurst Mgurst, who helped hold the backing track along with mixing in his own flair and energy to the show. Helping hyping up the crowd and kept Freddie on track at times. He really helped the show run very smoothly while also adding an extra flair to the performance.
The crowd all shoved forward trying to get as close as possible to Freddie Gibbs. The crowd really brought the energy, especially when Gibbs went off of the script because the crowd asked him to play certain songs and go mostly off of his setlist to play a ton of songs from both of his albums, Alfredo 1 and Alfredo 2. This really got the crowd excited and made the show feel all the more personal for both Gibbs and the SLC crowd.
Gibbs was very good at connecting with the crowd, having them moshing, waving their arms, and even during a special moment, asking the crowd to bring out their flashlights during his performance to dedicate a song to his late father. This really touched the hearts of the crowd, and they all held up some light in honor. After the very special moment, Gibbs brought the energy back up again, having the crowd jumping all around and having a sizable mosh pit forming.
The SLC crowd loved Gibbs, rapping along to every word and chanting his name whenever possible. Everyone was so excited to see him perform at SLC Twilight. Gibbs clearly loved his fans, staying an extra few minutes after his set to talk with fans in the front row and thanking them for coming.
