Girls of all ages were flocking to see Lauren Spencer Smith play for her first time in Utah at the Union Event Center! This was one of the loudest crowds I’ve ever heard and seen, even before the artists started to play; everyone was screaming along to the preshow playlist of Olivia Rodrigo, Chappell Roan, and Benson Boone. The crowd was so loud that they were impressing the touring crew of Smith’s, who then came out to video the crowd singing “Beautiful Things” by Benson Boone, as they were so loud it could be heard from all throughout the building. It was clear that the night was going to be extremely fun, passionate, and exciting for fans.

Maisy Kay

Maisy Kay was like a butterfly floating around the stage! Her red flowing outfit, apparently chosen by her fans to wear that night, had gorgeous beaded flowers and long cape/wing sleeves. She also had a special custom butterfly on her microphone, adding a touch of whimsy to her stage presence. She may have been alone on the stage without a backing band, but her presence and energy filled the stage, and her excitement and love of performing radiated throughout the venue.

Along with playing some of her songs like the energetic “Technicolor Honeymoon”, and “Almost Touch Me” she sang a cover of “Rolling in the Deep” originally by Adele. Kay’s version of the song included impressive whistle tones and gave the song a more girly pop feeling to it. Her popstar energy carried through her performance, with her even shouting out a little girl in the back of the crowd who made little heart hands, and Kay hoped she was having a good time. This made the whole crowd awe at the adorable interaction with the young fan.

Kay asked the crowd a few questions. First, “Has anyone been in love?” Followed by “Has anyone been in love and have it not work out?” to which the crowd raised their hands. Kay continued, “This next song is from an EP of love songs that I wrote all about my Ex boyfriend who dumped me a week after I got home from my first ever world tour, so… so singing these songs about him can be a bit weird, cause their all about love but ive found the best thing to do is to attach new meaning to the songs and to me the most powerful form of love is getting to share music, and I feel that so strongly with every one of you here tonight.

So I’d like to dedicate this next song to you, whether it’s your first time hearing of me, or you’ve heard me before, or even another show on this tour. Thank you so much for your time. I love you. This is for you.” before playing the song, which the crowd loved, “Love is a God”. The crowd loved the dedication and loved Maisy Kay.

Sofia Camara

Portuguese and Canadian singer Sofia Camara warmed the crowd and excited them to see the lovely Lauren Spencer Smith. Camara said, “Hi guys! This is not my first time in Salt Lake City, but woah, you guys are crazy, like this is going to be my favorite time ever been in Salt Lake City.” to which the crowd loved that, and cheered even louder. She then continued by saying, “I got to drink some water. The elevation thing is getting to me a little bit. Haha. I’m so excited. This next song, I’d really appreciate if you guys had some flashlights. This one is called “Starlight,” and it’s a really emotional song for me; it’s one of my favorite ones to play, so if you know it, please sing it with me.”

It was truly a magical moment, every single person turned on their flashlights and lit up the room, like a bunch of stars in the sky. The crowd also knew every word as well, filling the room with emotion.

Camara is a storyteller through her music and live at concerts. Before the crowd went wild, screaming along to her next song, Camara shared, “This next song I wrote about one of the worst heartbreaks I’ve been through, and it’s changed my life in so many ways. But I get to sing about it and do so many other beautiful things with you guys. So this one is called “Parking Lot”. If you know it, sing along.” The crowd went absolutely wild over this song, absolutely loving it and loving Sofia Camara.

Lauren Spencer Smith

It was Canadian singer Lauren Spencer Smith’s first time playing in SLC, and the crowd absolutely adored her. The stage was set up like a bus station, complete with a bench and a payphone that would occasionally ring to move through the show’s storyline of past, present, and future versions of Smith.

Before Smith came out onto the stage, the crowd was chanting, “Lauren…Lauren…Lauren” and the stage was dark, with sounds of rain and thunder over the speakers, until the phone started to ring, and lit up in different colors. Smith then emerged from behind the bus station after a phone message played saying, “You have reached Lauren Spencer Smith. I can’t come to the phone right now. I’m a bit busy giving all the people who deserve it, their karma.” To which the crowd was wildly cheering, extremely excited to see her run out onto the stage and perform.

Opening the show playing “IF KARMA DOESN’T GET YOU”, “Lighting The Flame”, and “28” Lauren welcomed the crowd to the “Art of Being a Mess” tour, and continued by saying, “I’m so excited to be here, this is my first time ever in Utah, and my first time here in Salt Lake city. Earlier, you guys were saying I needed to try specific Swig drinks. I’d love you guys to know that I did try your recommendations, yay! I even tried a Mountain Dew one for you. I did! I did like it!”

The crowd went wild for this nod to Utah soda culture, and loved it when she continued, “Shockingly, I have a friend here, and she said the one that I like is really weird, so you’ll probably boo me when I tell you. But I had a Sour Patch Kid one. The one which I hear is not normal, but I loved it, I’m obsessed.” The crowd didn’t end up booing her and instead cheered even louder.

Smith told the crowd to channel their anger and sadness into singing along to her songs. Smith was incredible at drawing out fans’ emotions and relating to their pain. She also connected with fans with games throughout the show, one of which was called “Tell Me A Secret”. In this game, fans prior to the show would write in anonymous notes that were then put in a box and chosen from to be read aloud. These stories had the crowd laughing along, gasping, and cheering for the bravery of sharing the details.

Later in the concert, Smith brought out a giant wheel with different colors, each representing a different cover song that could be sung. She brought a young fan onto the stage to spin the wheel, and it landed on “Your choice,” to which the fan chose to have a cover of Olivia Rodrigo’s “Favorite Crime”. Smith played many of her songs from the latest album, “The Art of Being a Mess,” but also played fan favorites like “That Part”, “Pray”, “Fingers Crossed,” and of course, “Flowers.”

The crowd was screaming along to their favorite songs all night long, crying along to lyrics that they felt deeply, and sharing their joy of seeing Smith perform. Lauren even said that she’s “Coming back just for the crowds” because of Salt Lake’s infectious energy.
