Ogden Twilight

8-time Grammy-nominated artist, Kaskade, brought Cop Kid and Mr. Tape to perform at the Ogden Amphitheater on June 20th. Both Cop Kid and Mr. Tape are from Utah. The first time that I heard Kaskade was in 2011 with the Song “Eyes” featuring Mindell Gledhill. Having performed around the world on the biggest stages, it was an exciting day to see Kaskade hit the stage here in Utah. Kaskade has been consistent throughout his career, releasing hit after hit, and currently has over 4 million monthly listeners on Spotify alone. He has had an influential career and has had impactful collaborations with artists such as Deadmau5, Skyler Gray, Haley, Meghan Trainor, and Skrillex. It was another warm and soon-to-be-packed show.
Cop Kid

Cop Kid is a duo consisting of Marny and Boone, who met in Utah. As they hit the stage, Boone would shout into the microphone, telling Utah to stay hydrated. Boone wore heart-shaped pink sunglasses, and Marny wore bright red sunglasses that could be seen from afar. Throughout the set, Marny would add her vocals to certain songs as Boone would support her on the mixing board. The bleachers, grass, and VIP area would begin to fill as the duo continued their set. They had local support and had the VIP section moving throughout the set. Their energy was positive and they were a great pick to open the show.

Their songs “Bonsai” and “BKLYN” are great representations of their music. They would end their set with their take on “Messy” by Lola Young. They are recognized in the Salt Lake City and Ogden area, so hopefully they can bring their set back to one of these cities soon.
Mr. Kid

Another duo would hit the stage after Cop Kid, consisting of Nate and Maso,n named Mr. Tape. The two met at the Battle of the Bands. The duo is Provo-based and has collaborated with Kaskade and even released music on his label. Mr. Tape has performed all over the country, internationally, and even here at the Ogden Amphitheater with Kaskade in 2023. The first thing that I had noticed with their set was how their mixes did not contain many lyrics as the opening set. Again, they had the fans moving as the amphitheater continued to fill up.

A great song that represents their set and music would be “Come On” which is a collaboration with Kaskade. The two wore all black with the screens matching their outfits. After photographing the first three songs in their set, I wanted to get a feel of the energy by visiting the bleachers, the merch, and the lawn to see how to crowd was enjoying the show. The energy was great, and it was interesting the see the wide age range enjoying and dancing to their set.

Kaskade

Kaskade was born in Chicago and went to school here in Utah. He began DJing in Salt Lake City and would go on to perform around the world. Some major venues and events he has headlined or performed at are the SoFi stadium, Coachella, Rock in Rio, and Lollapalooza to name a few. Kaskade was also the first DJ to perform live throughout the Superbowl which he performed last year. When I saw Kaskade on the list of artists this year set to perform at the Ogden Amphitheater, I was excited for Utah. The VIP area was full as the photographers prepared for Kaskade to hit the stage. The area in front of the pit was off limits, so we had to claim our spot within the VIP area.

Kaskade would open his set with the song “State of Mind”. This song features Lipless and British vocalist Poppy Baskcomb. Listening to this song back, it brings me back to Kaskade walking out on stage and the happiness that would hit the crowd. Before his set started, I was hoping that he would play my favorite song of his as I photographed the first three songs. This usually doesn’t happen as artists usually save their hits towards the end of their set. Just like that the song dropped and “Eyes” began to play.

The whole amphitheater began to dance, and everyone began to run up to the stage in the VIP area, blocking the photographers off. “Eyes” is the lead single of his Fire & Ice album, which was released in 2011. The song features Mindy Gledhill. On YouTube alone has over 9 million views. As the set continued on Kaskade would play more of his hits, such as “Never Sleep Alone” featuring Tess Comrie, “Atmosphere”, and “Feeling the Night” featuring Becky Jean Williams. Kaskade would mix in songs from other artists such as Diplo, Florence + the Machine, Galantis, and Avicii throughout his set. Kaskade is a must-see artist if you ever get the chance to see him live. His set was filled with bass, smoke, confetti, and dancing throughout the night. It was a blast to have him back in Utah, and I hope he can make it back here again soon.
