On a crisp evening in Park City, Utah, the intimate and historic Egyptian Theatre provided an enchanting backdrop for an unforgettable night of music as The Ocean Blue returned to Utah on their Frigid Winter Days Tour. Known for their shimmering jangle and thoughtful lyricism, the band transformed their three-night residency in the cozy venue from quiet anticipation into a warm, pulsating world of sound that felt both nostalgic and immediate.
The Utah Symphony has been busy this summer. The Deer Valley Music Festival has been filled with a variety of great performances. From artists like Lindsey Stirling, to the music of Disney, to The Beach Boys, the symphony shows their range and brings great performance after great performance to the Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheater at Deer Valley. July 26 was no exception. Two great Tony-Award Award-winning Broadway Stars, Sutton Foster and Kelli O’Hara, graced the Park City stage. It was a special night for fans of musical theater. Getting to see two of the best performers Broadway has to offer in our state for one night doesn’t happen here all the time. The show was well attended, and the audience was totally entranced by these vocalists.
UCR Interview • Crystal Lariza & Kaden Hurst of Never Come Down
Interviewed by Kevin Rolfe
Award-winning, Portland-based, Bluegrass/Americana band, Never Come Down will be playing the Egyptian Theater in Park City on April 11 and 12.
Never Come Down have toured internationally and found acclaim at festivals such as Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Iceland Airwaves, Americanafest, FreshGrass, and RockyGrass.
We had the opportunity to visit with Crystal and Kaden leading up to this show. It was one of the more enjoyable interviews I’ve ever done. I particularly loved hearing about one of the best shows they’ve ever played. Enjoy!
Utah Concert Review: I’ve only been in cover bands myself, and it’s a fun hobby. But even in that, there’s nothing like that moment where you just gel as a band. So I can only imagine what that’s like when you’re making original music, coming up with your own stuff, your own style, or what you’re doing on your own instrument. Give me a sense of what that was like for you guys when you started just to feel that feeling as a band.
Dirty Heads put on a killer show on Saturday night! When I first heard that Dirty Heads was coming to play during the Sundance Film Festival, I was pretty excited and then a little surprised when I heard they were coming. Especially since they had just come to play in Utah only 6 months prior. But that did not stop them from bringing all of the energy and excitement that they always bring to their shows.
I’ve been waiting for a long time to see what was happening with Park City Live, a club located at the center of Park City’s Main Street. I’ve always enjoyed going to shows there, but I realized it had been some time since I had been to the venue. I was excited to see the venue get a new name, The Marquis Park City, a polished look, and a slew of announced concert dates. It was a brilliant move to open the venue during the Sundance Film Festival. The star-studded list of concerts included the one-of-a-kind, Devo. T
he band would be in town due to the festival premiering “Devo” the documentary about the band. Before the concert, Devo hosted a dinner at ChefDance Social presented by Space Perspective. Devo fans flooded The Marquis Park City and I’d imagine anyone who had attended the dinner before, knew the fun night of music that was in store.
Old Crow Medicine Show opened the 2023 Deer Valley Concert Series at the Snow Park Outdoor Concert Series a the Deer Valley Resort in Park City on July 13, 2023. It was a perfect evening to have the Americana band in Park City. It was a very hot day in the Salt Lake and Utah valleys. Park City is always a great place to escape to when it gets too hot. It’s always cooler. The night air was crisp, but the music on stage was as hot as the day was. Last year the concert series had a limited run so I was unable to make it to a show last year. The moment I parked my car and began walking to the venue, I knew as I took in the beautiful scenery that it was so good to be back.
The Monkees Celebrated by Micky Dolenz•June 8, 2023•Egyptian Theater Park City
Reviewed and Photographed by Kevin Rolfe
On June 8, 2023, nostalgic music fans made their way to the Egyptian Theater in Park City, Utah where they were treated to a truly memorable evening. Micky Dolenz, best known as a vocalist and drummer of The Monkees, took the stage for a highly anticipated concert. Dolenz, a living legend of the music industry, delivered a performance that showcased his timeless talent, infectious energy, and enduring appeal. The audience was transported back in time to the golden era of rock ‘n’ roll. Reveling in the hits that defined a generation. My hope is to capture the essence of that unforgettable evening in Park City. Where we celebrated the enduring artistry of Micky Dolenz.
On May 5th, movie star Dennis Quaid arrived in Park City to show off his musical talent to a theater full of adoring fans. When I was first asked to cover his concert I had to read the name a couple of times to make sure I wasn’t mistaken. I had no idea that the same Dennis Quaid I have grown up watching on the big screen also performed live music. It would be easy to go on and on about how talented of an actor Quaid is, but since this is a review of his concert I will leave his many well-loved movies for another day.
I only had the opportunity to see Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers live one time. It was on the 40th Anniversary tour. A tour that would turn out to be Petty’s last. I was fortunate to see the tour at the beautiful Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado. When Tom Petty died I was grateful to have seen him but like so many, I was sad that we would no longer get to see him perform his amazing songs again.
When I saw some years back that Petty Theft was coming to Utah, I was intrigued but wary of another band playing Petty’s music. Sometimes I can get a little snobby with music and I imagine I thought that Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers music was untouchable and should never be performed by a tribute band. I’ve learned that whenever I get snobby my narrow-minded view is usually wrong. When I saw that Petty Theft would not only be coming back to Utah but that they would be playing two dates (one in Salt Lake and one in Park City), I realized I must be missing something. I decided I needed to see these guys for myself.
