Ivan Cornejo brought his Mirada Tour Parte 2 to the Maverik Center on May 31st. Andrea Bejar would join Ivan to open the show. I had never photographed at the Maverik Center, so I was even more excited for the show. The Maverik Center holds over 12,000 and has hosted artists such as Justin Beiber, Elton John, and Linkin Park. Ivan Cornejo is a Mexican American singer-songwriter from Riverside California who was born in 2004.
Cornejo taught himself to play the guitar at a very young age and began sharing his music on platforms such as Instagram and TikTok giving him recognition for his guitar playing and lyrics. His music blends regional Mexican genres with a bit of indie and alternative. Ivan Cornejo has already accumulated millions of streams on Apple Music and Spotify. He also has over 600 million views on YouTube. When I arrived at the arena the first thing that I had noticed was how packed the lines were just to get inside of the arena and how busy the merch table was.

Andrea Bejar is also a Mexican American singer who incorporates bilingual songwriting. She recently joined Ivan on this leg of the tour. Her songs “Marigold”, and “Despierto” have hit over 3 million streams each. Andrea would hit the stage in a white dress and name illuminated on the screen behind her. From the first note that she hit you could hear the rich tone in her voice. After the first three songs, she would play an unreleased song. It was exciting to see everyone resonating with her music throughout the arena. Andrea would end her opening set by passing out a rose, letting the fans know that she would be by the merch table, and blowing the crowd kisses.

In-between sets I was able to see the halls in the arena packed with fans purchasing merch, food, balloons, and flowers. The anticipation filled the arena as we waited for Ivan to come out on stage. Karol G and Peso Pluma played throughout the arena and a face cam zoomed in on the fans during the intermission. It was finally time for Ivan to hit the stage as he walked onto a red-lit stage.
Ivan Cornejo

Ivan Cornejo performed “Atención” and “Sale para ser feliz” as I began to photograph. I was wondering which song he would walk out to and when I heard “Atención” start to play I thought it was the perfect song choice. The first two songs he performed were close to the pit while the third was performed towards the back of the stage next to his bandmates. As I was heading back to my seat I was thinking about how Ivan brought out all of Utah and his fans out to this show.

One of the first things that I noticed when I got back to my seat was how everyone was singing every single lyric. His lyrics are filled with love, loss, and heartbreak so it was no surprise to see passionate the singing was throughout the arena. I have attended concerts where the artist would hold out their microphone to the crowd and have the crowd finish the lyrics, but I have never seen it like this. If only I could include a video in the review to show how united the arena was when he would raise his microphone. Ivan would go on to play more of songs such as “Vuelve”, “HASTA LA MUERTE, and “J.” before performing some of my personal favorites.

The song he would perform next is a song/music video I would recommend to someone who hasn’t heard any of his music. It is off his recent album also titled Mirada and the video is full of color and lyrics. There was a big Mexican flag waving in the pit as he thanked Salt Lake City and told everyone that he loved them from the bottom of his heart. Ivan then asked the arena to take out their phones and turn on their flashlights for the next song. Vocals hit the speakers as the song “Me Prometi” started to play. The title of the song translates to “I Promised Myself” and is a song about the challenges of moving on from someone.

I know I say this about most of the concerts that I attend but if you can catch one of his shows you won’t regret it. The production, the visuals, and the feeling of being with his dedicated fan base. I watched a video online with the caption “This what you see at an Ivan Cornejo concert” and it was a video of a girl in the crowd crying while singing to one of his songs. This is the emotion that could be seen throughout the night. Hopefully, Ivan can make his way back to Utah one day.
