“Concerts on the Slopes” at The Canyons Resort in Park City, Utah, wrapped up their penultimate show of the season with an incredible 90’s throwback lineup of the Spin Doctors, Gin Blossoms, and Blues Traveler. The weather was perfect for the show, not too hot and not too chilly, and no threat of rain, which is not always a guarantee for a late summer show. There was some ongoing hillside construction on the slope where concert patrons observed the show, making it much cozier this season than in other past seasons, especially for this particular sold-out show.

Spin Doctors

The Spin Doctors kicked off the evening promptly at 6:00 pm and played a nice, tidy 9-song, 45-minute set. Even though frontman Chris Barron has a lot more white and silver in his hair and beard and hair than he did 30+ years ago, his voice is still very strong, and he has kept the old-man pounds off his body, and he can still shake and move with the best of them. A surprise highlight of their set was a beautiful cover of Prince’s “Purple Rain” accompanied by a few members of the Gin Blossoms and Blues Traveler. The set ended with a more expected highlight/ crowd favorite, “Two Princes.”

What Time Is It?
She Stands Alone
Rock ‘N’ Roll Heaven
Jimmy Olsen’s Blues
Purple Rain
Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong

Gin Blossoms

The Gin Blossoms took the stage next around 7:15 pm after about a 30-minute intermission. They played a solid 12-song, 60-minute set which included many fan favorites: “Follow You Down”; “Until I Fall Away”; “Found Out About You”; “Allison Road”; “Hey Jealousy”; and “Til I Hear It From You”. Like the Spin Doctors did, the Gin Blossoms also had a surprise cover to share with the crowd that night. They also invited members of the other groups (Spin Doctors and Blues Traveler) to join them in a special cover of Elton John’s “Rocket Man”.

Robin Wilson (Gin Blossom’s frontman) has made an effort to visit Utah frequently over the last several years. It probably helps that Utah neighbors the Arizona-based band; nevertheless, Robin always has kind words and fond feelings for Utah. One interesting note for the band, which has had the same 5 members since 2012, is that they had a new drummer filling in for Scott Hessel.

Blues Traveler

Blues Traveler wrapped up the evening, kicking their set off at 8:50 pm and playing right up until the 10:00 pm curfew. Although the previous two sets both included members from each of the three bands, we hadn’t seen John Popper (Blues Traveler frontman) up until this point in the night when he entered the stage to the cheers of those in attendance.

A fun, jammy tribute to the late Ozzy Osbourne was shared with the crowd via an instrumental version of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs”. John also had Robin Wilson come join him for a moving version of “The Mountains Win Again”. The crowd went nuts for big hits “Run Around”, the second song of the set, as well as the show closer “Hook”. At the end of the show, John tosses several harmonicas into the crowd.

For fans of ’90s rock, this show was a special treat and a really fun evening for all who attended. Concerts On The Slopes put together another great season at Canyons Village. I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us next year.
