Margo Price, joined by Leon Majcen, brought her Wild Heart Tour to the Commonwealth Room in Salt Lake City on November 11th. I wasn’t familiar with Margo prior to the show, but I have heard rave reviews, so I was excited to see what the show had in store!

When I arrived at the venue, I loved that the atmosphere felt laid back and calm! It was filled with people, mostly a bit older than I was, which may have contributed to that. Even though they were calm, their anticipation was palpable!

Leon Majcen

When Leon Majcen stepped on stage for his first night on the Wild At Heart Tour with just his guitar and harmonica, I was immediately surprised by his sound. I’m guessing he’s a few years younger than I am, but he sounded decades older (in a good way) with his deep voice!

He opened up the night with “Thinkin’ ‘Bout Love.” It’s a catchy folk/country tune, and it was clear from the smiles on their faces and dancing that the crowd loved Leon and his music from the start! They’d have a fun banter back and forth throughout the night! Leon was very interactive with the fans, and they were with him, too! I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen a crowd so engaged with an opening artist, and that speaks volumes about not only the fans, but even more so about Leon’s talent and stage presence.

After playing through, “Sunday Morning Coffee,” and, “World Gone By,” Leon shared that it’s always good to stop in Salt Lake, but he’s still getting used to the altitude. A person standing next to me said, “You and me both!” which I thought was funny and relatable since the altitude her definitely does take some getting used to!

People cheered when he announced that he was going to play John Prine’s, “That’s The Way The World Goes ‘Round!” They were even more excited when he announced a few songs later that he actually had ten more minutes to play after he’d already said his thank yous and goodbyes!

Leon ended the night with, “Bars, Beds, & Cards.” His skillful one man band set was full of great songs that he performed with ease and a stage presence that made fans feel like he was their new best friend!

Margo Price

Margo made a quick, grand entrance as the sound of an engine revving caught the audience’s attention! She and the band got right into their first song, which I noted as, “Groovy!!” It was a cover of George Jones’ song, “I Just Don’t Give A Damn,” but Margo’s version had a heavy funk backbeat that made it completely her own.

For the next song, Margo said, “This one is called wild at heart.” It sounded like it was right out of the classic country genre, maybe 60s or 70s country. I grew up in music that sounded like that, so I really liked it! The band members also looked the part, donning outfits and hair styles that were modern, yet could also likely fit in in a band decades prior to this one.

The night continued with tunes that gave that similar vibe from a duet on the song, “Love Me Like You Used To,” with her band mate, Logan Ledger, “Tennessee Song,” “Don’t Let The Bastards Get You Down,” and, “Nowhere Is Where.”

Margo’s vocals were amazing. She proved that she could really do it all from slow, quiet songs to belting powerfully in other songs. Her band also didn’t miss a beat and provided wonderful backing to Margo.

I noticed that with each song, the lights were skillfully customized and not one display repeated itself. From bright pops of color, to romantic glows and unique takes on spotlights, the lighting director really outdid himself!

I appreciated how present the people in the audiences were! There were a handful of phones being held up to record (not that there’s anything wrong with that – I obviously love to document as much of a show as I can, too!), but for the most part, the fans stayed off of their phones which freed them up to sing, dance, and just absorb the music!

Margo ended the night with a cover of, “Maggie’s Farm,” by Bob Dylan. It was an iconic way to end a wonderful show!

The night was filled with music that felt like I was being transported back in time, not because I knew the songs, but because of how they made me feel. I love that about live music! The fans who filled the Commonwealth Room ate up every second of Leon and Margo’s performances. I heard various crowd members confirm what I was thinking – these two artists’ next time in Salt Lake City couldn’t come soon enough!
