Last week in Salt Lake City, Purity Ring put on a mesmerising and immersive show at The Depot! From start to finish, it was a dreamy spectacle of floating ambience and unreal visuals. The room was nearly sold out, and everyone came ready to be transported to another dimension. I was really stoked for this show as I listened to the setlist on my way to the venue! Purity Ring had definitely been on my list of artists to see, and I had no idea what to expect! I had no clue what the production was going to be, and when I saw the rows of fan-shaped lights stationary on the stage, I was very intrigued by what that was going to look like.

Purity Ring is a two-piece dreamy electronic pop band from Alberta, Canada! They started in the early 2010s while they were in another band, experimenting with electronic sounds and production. They released their first record, ‘Shrines’, in 2012 after being signed to a Canadian record label, and it was a hit! It reached the Billboard 200, and the band had a devoted fanbase soon after! They released another album, ‘Another Eternity’ in 2015, which further propelled their career as electronic pop gems! They’ve released two more albums since then, the latest being ‘Purity Ring’, which dropped last month!
YuniVERSE
Opening for the show was YuniVERSE, an Indonesian/Australian electronic pop producer and singer whose music is a perfect blend of atmospheric soundscapes and dreamy synth beats under soft and floating vocals. Very similar to Purity Ring! Her backdrop on stage was a gorgeous wall of flowers that matched her lacey corset dress. I really enjoyed her performance!

The intro to Purity Ring’s show had the room in high anticipation! Mystical ambience filled the room and started to build as the lights dimmed. This went on for several minutes as the duo prepared to take the stage. The room was cheering as the music started to swell even more. Lights flickered, and the pair walked on stage.

Singer, Megan James, stood at the top of the stage, slightly hidden behind the row of LED lights. And keyboardist Corin Roddick took his place at the bottom, where he had his synth board and keyboard. One row of fans was behind Corin, and one was in front. As they turned on and started spinning, they displayed flashy, holographic-looking visuals and lights! Spraying colors, sparks, and holographs of flames in front of them. They blended into the light, which was really stunning and unique to watch in person! I have never seen a show with this kind of 3-dimensional lighting.

There was also a screen in the back that lit up with various mystical visuals. The duo was frequently shadowed by all of this light, but throughout the songs, the lights would silhouette them or light them enough that I could capture. Megan wore a stunning, flowy, and poofy jumpsuit with ribbons and lace, and her hair was long and curly. She, and the whole production reminded me a lot of Magdalena Bay. After seeing their show, I’m sure Purity Ring was a huge inspiration for them!

They opened with ‘part ii’, ‘many lives’ and their very first single ‘obedear’. Megan’s voice was so angelic, and it wove beautifully into the beats of the music. Everything was perfectly woven, in fact. Everything from the production to the visuals to the vocals. It was stunning to watch in person! I personally loved the one visual of the Delicate Arch in Moab, which I’m assuming was specifically designed for this show. I loved the flames and the sparking LEDS, it all looked very realistic, but it was an illusion from the spinning fans. Really dope! If you get the chance to catch one of their shows, I highly recommend doing so! It was so dreamy and entertaining!
