The summer of 2022 will be remembered by music fans as the summer when concerts were back in full force.  Sure concerts started rolling in by mid-summer 2021.  But this summer it seems every band ever is on tour.   Most days have multiple options for live music fans to choose from.  Often it’s a very difficult choice that has to be made.  I have found myself making difficult decisions on a daily basis trying to figure out who I should see.  But on August 5, 2022, there was only one choice.  The opening night of Imagine Dragons Mercury Tour w/ Macklemore and Kings Elliot.

SLC Twilight

Twelve years after their first Twilight performance, The Decemberists returned to the Salt Lake Twilight Summer Concert Series. I was excited for the opportunity to join the many fans gathered at The Gallivan Center to see the Portland-based indie rock band. The Decemberists may have brought their hometown’s rainy weather along with them, but that didn’t stop everyone from having a great time. The concert was the band’s 5th stop on their Arise From the Bunkers tour. They were formed in Portland in 2000, and the band consists of Colin Meloy (lead vocals, guitar), Chris Funk (guitar, multi-instrumentalist), Jenny Conlee (piano, keyboards, accordion), Nate Query (bass), and John Moen (drums).

A hot and cloudy day didn’t stop anyone from seeing Coheed & Cambria with Alkaline Trio. Unfortunately, Mothica was unable to make this stop but the crowd was still so excited for what the night would bring. I got to the venue an hour before doors, and the line was already up the sidewalk and wrapping around the venue.  People were parking blocks away to walk to the show they would not want to miss. The majority of people I saw had a Coheed and Cambria shirt on. There were families with their younger kids there, ready to see their favorite band.

Ogden Twilight has resumed! After almost six weeks between opening night with Bleachers and this show, it felt good to get back to the Ogden Amphitheater. From here on out Ogden Twilight will be happening on a pretty steady schedule. With so many great show coming up, it will be hard to stay away. Shows like The Shins, The National, Beach House, and Modest Mouse are sure to bring large crowds. I imagine those nights will be similar to the night we had with Local Natives.

Backstreet Boys

After a two-year hiatus, the Backstreet Boys resumed their DNA world tour on August 4th. They brought a performance that was truly “larger than life” to the USANA Amphitheater. There was little surprise that the show sold out to an audience made up primarily of women in their 30s and 40s. I was looking forward to a night full of boy band nostalgia along with thousands of other women there. The Backstreet Boys knew precisely what their fans wanted and would not disappoint.

If it were possible, I would simply write, WOW, and be done with my review. It’s just about all that needs to be said. What an incredible night of music. Bleachers opened up the 2022 Ogden Twilight Concert Series. Everyone else scheduled to play in this series will have their work cut out for them when it comes to measuring up to what Bleachers brought to the Ogden Amphitheater. Less than a year ago, Bleachers played a memorable show at The Union. I, unfortunately, had to miss that show. The discussion of how amazing that show lasted for weeks. I regretted so much not being there. So when I saw that Bleachers would be on the Ogden Twilight bill, I knew I couldn’t miss it.

Sandy Amphitheater was the perfect setting for a concert on Monday, August 1st. Little Feat and Hot Tuna drew in a crowd that have loved these bands for years, maybe decades even! After all, the show was a part of Little Feat’s 45th Anniversary tour. The Waiting For Columbus 45th Anniversary Tour 2022, where they would be playing the entire Waiting For Columbus album! There were many fans sporting tie-dye and Hawaiian or brightly patterned shirts. Which ended up making sense as Little Feat had a tie-dye shirt in their assortment of merchandise selection. And when each band took the stage, they had members also dressed in brightly colored shirts!

After the success of their 2017 American acoustic tour, Punch Brothers decided it was finally time to revive the tour and hit the road. The 2022 version of American Acoustic would include some new and familiar faces. This time around Punch Brothers would be joined by Watchhouse and Sarah Jarosz. The second night of American Acoustic would bring the musicians to Salt Lake City’s Red Butte Garden for an unforgettable show. I had never been to a concert at Red Butte before but had always heard such wonderful things. I was excited to finally have the opportunity to experience it for myself. The perfectly manicured venue was absolutely beautiful. With the flowerbeds in front of the stage and large trees as a backdrop, it was the perfect place to enjoy live music.

Utah loves Josh Groban.  He could easily do a concert in Utah every year and it would be well attended. In some ways, it feels like a homecoming concert when Groban stops here on his tours.  I’m sure that is in part, due to him recording his Awake concert film right here in Salt Lake City at the very same venue where we saw him on July 27, 2022.  To my knowledge, he has no ties to this state.  It just feels like there is a real connection between Utah and Josh.  Groban’s stop on his Harmony Tour was no exception.  The lineup was stacked with talent from newcomer Eleri Ward to the really fun Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Josh Groban.  The night never lacked for beautiful moments of music.

Despite the heat, fans lined the street outside The Complex just in time for Senses Fail to open for The Used and Rise Against this past Tuesday. Going into this concert I was pretty excited because I haven’t seen a concert set up on the outside stage at The Complex yet. So I was intrigued to see the stage setup. To my surprise, fans filled the outside lot all the way to the entry gate.
