Whenever you think of a concert or live music what comes to mind? Loud music? A crowd going nuts and dancing around? The frontman running around the stage and getting the crowd going? Those aren’t wrong answers. But sometimes a great concert can be the opposite of all of those things. Such was the case at Last Thursday’s SLC Twilight with Blind Pilots. If you wanted to spend a summer evening sitting outside kicking back and relaxing while listening to some great music then this was the show for you.
Things started off with Utah based Americana band, The Hollering Pines. Recently returning from the Red Wing Roots Music Festival in Virginia, The Hollering Pines performed songs from their three albums including their newest release Moments in Between. The Hollering Pines is one of those great local bands rich in talent from the songwriting to each member and their skills vocally or instrumentally. The evergrowing audience seemed to really appreciate The Hollering Pines. It’s not easy opening a show and these folks did an impressive job getting things going.

The next band on the bill was Foxwarren. Their casual nature kept vibes mellow as they moved through their 2018 self-titled debut album. Typically a solo artist, Andy Shauf reunited with some of his college friends to form Foxwarren. It was clear that they enjoyed playing together. The music fit the perfect weather. People were sprawled out on blankets or hitting up the food and beer trucks as they looked back to the stage soaking up the music.
By the time Blind Pilot took the stage the now large crowd had been properly warmed up. Blind Pilot was lovely to listen. Their breezy music being played along with the soft colorful lights on the stage made for a real euphoric atmosphere. Lead singer Israel Nebeker talked to the crowd regularly. He stated that we were all here to just enjoy the music. And enjoy the music we did. The audience loved hearing some of their favorite songs like, “3 Rounds and a Sound” and “Half Moon”.
So yeah, maybe people weren’t crowd surfing or going crazy but this wasn’t that type of SLC Twilight. This was the perfect show for what it was intended to be. It was simply a mellow Thursday night to relax and enjoy some excellent music.
The next SLC Twilight will be on August 1. This show will include two bands with Utah roots, Sego and The Aces. Young the Giant will be the headliners. Click here for tickets. This is going to be a good one.
