On Tuesday, April 26th, Psychedelic Rock band The Flaming Lips brought their colorful show to The Union Event Center in Salt Lake City. I was familiar with a couple of their songs. In preparation for the night I checked out a few videos from their past concerts. With the research I did, I knew that this concert would be one of a kind.

I arrived at 7:00 just as the doors were about to open. Outside stood a line of excited fans ready to be entertained. I was however surprised to see that the crowd for the night was much smaller than I expected. The band often plays to a sold-out audience, including their previous sold-out shows at the Ogden Twilight Concert Series. My guess is that many local fans may have actually traveled to Denver to catch their show the night before. Denver is known for having a bigger psychedelic scene. Or possibly fans are expecting them to return to Ogden Twilight, which is unfortunately not the case this year.

There is no doubt in my mind that the best way to start a week is with a concert. To top it all off is with a rock concert. That is exactly what I signed myself up for this last Sunday with The Warning headlining at The Complex. I hadn’t heard of either Devora or The Warning previously but I’m never opposed to hearing new artists. Especially if my first time hearing them would be live.

My favorite musicians write and perform their own songs. Much popular music isn’t actually written or created by the person who performs it. Many pop singers, at least many of those dominating the charts these days, are the singing, dancing puppets of their record labels. These pop stars perform songs purchased, often at unfair rates, from creative individuals tucked away from the limelight. Every now and then, though, one of these truly creative people steps out of the shadows to showcase their own work.

On April 20th, IDLES visited The Complex for a show in between Coachella sets and rocked the house! Upon arrival, I noticed the crowd was very chill compared to other events. They seemed to be there just for a good time. Not a lot of hurry to get to the front of the crowd or save spots. Although it was a big room, The Complex began to fill up very quickly.

With this show being my first time covering a show at The Union Event Center I was heavily anticipating going to this show. On April 11th The Story So Far kicked off their full US tour for spring 2022. TSSF has been one of my favorite bands of all time and this was my first time being able to see them live due to COVID and previous issues with being able to get to their shows. So to say I was excited was an understatement. Not to mention how stacked the lineup was! It was just a perfect night for pop-punk listeners. Unfortunately, the weather got worse as the night started. So I, unfortunately, missed the first 3 songs from Microwave.

After months of touring, Tate McRae finished off her North America Tour in Salt Lake City. She visited The Complex in the Grand room. I arrived about 30 minutes before doors were supposed to open. The line was already very long. Although it was mostly females waiting for the show, I did spot a surprising amount of male attendees waiting in the rain. It was very impressive to see so many devoted fans waiting in the poor weather for so long.

The Soundwell buzzed with excitement as I entered the doors Thursday night. The crowd gathered closer to the barricade at the front of the stage as Lexi Jayde introduced herself. I could feel the excitement of the fans as she began to explain the story of her music. She opened with her new single “Self Sabotage”. She really connected with members of the crowd who have recently gone through a breakup. Revving up the energy saying “You f**king got this! Whoever needed to hear that. I love you so much.”

Let me start off by saying that Hippo Campus is my favorite band and seeing them live is always something indescribable for me. But I will try my best to be objective! On Saturday, April 2, 2022, Hippo Campus returned to Salt Lake City, Utah after three years! I can’t even believe it had been that long since the last time they were here.  But you know, thanks Covid. It was an exciting night because up to this point this would be their biggest headlining show to date. I think that’s quite an honor!

Just days after winning his first Grammy for “Best Rap Performance” on Sunday, April 3, Baby Keem visited The Depot in Salt Lake City to play a sold-out show! I had the opportunity to attend this show with some friends and I couldn’t have had more fun! The Depot was very professional in making sure the line was fair and orderly. They were kind and answered all of my questions before entering. I assume Baby Keem was in control of what music played before his set. It was immediately getting everyone excited. Classical music from the great Beethoven played on the PA.

As dusk settled on Salt Lake City Thursday, Hurtado took the stage at Kilby Court, ready for a new chapter in their home state. The crowd buzzed with excitement as lead singer and frontman Sam Hurtado grabbed the mic. With his brother Simon on drums, Will on lead guitar, and Simon on bass, Hurtado captivated the audience with their indie but dreamy vibes. After playing a few songs, Sam took a moment to connect with the audience and their loyal fans. He introduced himself and the band. Then went on to explain that their new single “Energizer Bunny” had just been released that day. It was a special moment for Hurtado.
